It is located about 1,200 light-years away and appears as a long, narrow dust cloud silhouetted against the Milky Way. The nebula contains several dense cores that are sites of potential star formation. It was catalogued by E. E. Barnard and later included in the Lynds Dark Nebula catalogue.
